“Romance Writer Lily Chu Masters Audiobook Magic”

Date:

Toronto romance writer Lily Chu uses a unique method to perfect her novels before publication. She listens to her computer read the book aloud while engaging in daily tasks, providing her with a fresh perspective on the listener experience. Chu, known for releasing her novels as audiobooks first, aims to immerse her audience fully in the story.

A recent report by BookNet Canada revealed that 81% of respondents enjoy listening to audiobooks while multitasking, such as working, commuting, or doing chores. Chu’s debut novel, “The Stand-In,” which tells the tale of a biracial Canadian woman mistaken for a famous Chinese movie star, was initially published as an audiobook by Audible before hitting print.

With the audiobook industry experiencing significant growth, especially in the romance genre, Chu’s latest release, “Just Kiss Already,” marks her sixth book to debut as an audiobook. The surge in romance audiobooks can be attributed to the pandemic era, where individuals sought escapism and entertainment while dealing with isolation.

According to Audible’s Diana Dapito, romance stands out as one of the fastest-growing genres in Canada, with a substantial increase in audiobook preference from 8% in 2020 to 16% in 2025. Romance novels, often offering a guaranteed happy ending, hold a special place in the hearts of readers seeking emotional journeys that culminate in gratifying resolutions.

Canadian audiobook narrator Angelina Rocca emphasizes the importance of skilled narration in creating an immersive experience for listeners. By focusing on sound effects and vocal nuances that highlight women’s perspectives and pleasure, audiobooks can transport listeners into a cinematic world of storytelling.

Despite facing historical stigma, romance novels are gaining widespread acceptance, offering listeners a private escape into intimate and sensuous narratives. The genre’s current popularity has led to a shift in perception, encouraging more individuals to explore and embrace the diverse world of romance audiobooks.

Audio subscription apps like Quinn and Dipsea provide a gateway for readers to explore various styles and levels of erotica and romance audiobooks. Lizz Kidd from Hopeless Romantic Books in Toronto praises these platforms for their role in allowing listeners to discover new stories and support artists while exploring their sensuality at their own pace.
