Laura Greaves embarked on a quest via social media to find a gentle ewe in Saskatchewan to be a companion for her blind llama, Maple, rather than a breeding ewe. Greaves, an experienced equine veterinarian, is accustomed to caring for animals with special needs and saw Maple as a unique challenge. Peeps, a talkative sheep from Eyebrow, Sask., was the perfect match due to her vocal nature.
Initially, Greaves sought a guardian llama to protect her animals from coyotes and stumbled upon Maple, a blind llama in need of help. Jacquie Poole, a friend of Greaves, discovered Maple and felt a connection, leading to a joint effort to bring Maple to her new home, despite Maple’s poor condition.
Upon Maple’s arrival, it was evident that she required immediate medical attention due to an eye condition. Subsequently, both of Maple’s eyes had to be surgically removed, a complex procedure that required a team of professionals. Maple faced challenges adjusting to her blindness, relying on auditory cues for navigation around her surroundings.
As Maple struggled to integrate with other animals, Greaves decided to find her a suitable companion. Peeps, the sheep, emerged as the ideal choice due to her vocal nature and ability to guide Maple. Their bond blossomed, providing Maple with comfort and support in her new environment.
Despite initial adjustments and ongoing care, Greaves remains optimistic about Maple’s future, hoping to eventually integrate her and Peeps with the other animals. The duo’s evolving relationship showcases the power of companionship in overcoming challenges.
