The head coach of the Swift Current Broncos has stepped down following a probe by the Western Hockey League that uncovered violations of the league’s conduct rules.
Dean DeSilva resigned as head coach on Friday after receiving a five-game suspension and a $10,000 fine from the WHL. The league determined that DeSilva breached its conduct standards during two on-ice incidents while dealing with player discipline.
WHL Commissioner Dan Near emphasized the importance of accountability and adherence to set standards within the league. He stated that integrity and the well-being of all involved in the game are top priorities.
DeSilva’s suspension ran from November 5 to November 11, but on November 14, the Broncos announced his resignation. General manager Chad Leslie expressed that the decision was reached mutually for the best interests of both parties and the organization’s commitment to fostering a positive environment for players.
This development occurred two years after the departure of the Swift Current Broncos and their then-head coach, Devan Praught, who parted ways after Praught received a five-game suspension for allegedly violating WHL conduct standards.
In a related incident, the WHL also suspended Peter Anholt, the general manager of the Lethbridge Hurricanes, and fined the team $10,000. Anholt was found to have engaged in intimidating behavior and language during a post-game address to players following a loss to Edmonton in October. He is set to resume his duties on November 26.
Anholt acknowledged his lapse in behavior and pledged to uphold higher standards in the future. The WHL mentioned that both investigations were initiated based on reports received via its anonymous tip line known as the WHL Respect Line.
