Within a short span of less than two weeks, the breakout horror sensation from YouTuber Kane Parsons raked in $212 million globally, with a significant portion of $135 million coming from the U.S. and Canada. This achievement dethroned last year’s “Marty Supreme,” led by Timothée Chalamet, which previously held A24’s top spot with $191 million in earnings.
“Backrooms” not only broke box-office records for A24 but also marked several milestones for the studio that has produced acclaimed films like “Everything Everywhere All At Once,” “Moonlight,” and “The Drama.”
Kane Parsons, at just 20 years old, emerged as the youngest director to dominate the box office, setting a new record for A24. The film also marked A24’s biggest opening weekend, grossing $81 million in the U.S. and Canada. Additionally, it made history as the largest original horror debut ever and became A24’s highest-grossing movie domestically within just four days, crossing the $200 million revenue threshold.
All these achievements were accomplished with a modest budget of $10 million. Before its theatrical success, “Backrooms” originated as a personal project on a laptop, utilizing 3D animation software. Originally presented as a viral 22-video found-footage YouTube series by Parsons in 2022, the project garnered over 25 million views and developed a dedicated fan base.
The attention to detail in the YouTube series captured the interest of A24, leading to Parsons being enlisted to expand his concept and direct the film focusing on liminal spaces. Producer Chris Ferguson believed in the transition of Parsons’ YouTube audience to the big screen, emphasizing the importance of staying true to the series and not underestimating the viewers.
The film, featuring Chiwetel Ejiofor as a furniture store owner who stumbles upon a mysterious door leading to endless empty rooms, follows the journey of his therapist, portrayed by Renate Reinsve, as she ventures into the unknown to rescue him. Produced in collaboration with Chernin Entertainment, Shawn Levy’s 21 Laps, and horror maestro James Wan, known for works like “The Conjuring” and “Insidious,” “Backrooms” has captivated audiences with its unique storyline and visual appeal.
