Solomon Elimimian and the CFL Players’ Association were taken by surprise when CFL Commissioner Stewart Johnston revealed the league’s plans to alter rules and field dimensions without consulting the union back in September. Elimimian, the CFLPA president, emphasized the importance of involving players in any future rule changes that could impact their roles on the field. Johnston, in his first CFL state of the league news conference, addressed the controversial changes that include eliminating single points for missed field goals and kickoffs clearing the end zone, as well as reducing field length and adjusting goalpost placement starting in 2027.
Elimimian stressed the significance of player input in decisions that could directly affect their game. Johnston defended the changes, stating they aim to enhance innovation while preserving the essence of Canadian football. Despite facing criticism from players like Nathan Rourke, Johnston remains optimistic about the potential benefits of the new rules, including a revamped digital operation and the introduction of a season-long fantasy football game for the 2026 season. The CFL commissioner also highlighted the upcoming release of the 2026 schedule and emphasized the league’s commitment to continual improvement both on and off the field.
