Vancouver authorities reported the tragic death of an eight-year-old girl on Tuesday following a fall from a high-rise balcony in Yaletown. The incident occurred near Nelson Street and Expo Boulevard around 2:30 p.m. PT on Nov. 11, prompting a response from the Vancouver Police Department (VPD).
Despite immediate life-saving efforts by first responders, the girl was pronounced deceased at the scene. The VPD’s Major Crime Section is actively investigating the incident and urging anyone with information to come forward and assist the authorities.
Const. Tania Visintin of the VPD emphasized that all sudden deaths are thoroughly examined to determine if any criminal elements are involved. In this case, due to the gravity of the situation and the presence of numerous individuals, the Major Crime detectives are leading the investigation given their extensive expertise within the department.
Initial reports indicated that the child fell from the 23rd floor to a balcony on the seventh floor. Visintin expressed deep sorrow for all parties affected by the tragedy, highlighting the profound impact on the family, emergency responders, and the wider community.
The child attended school in Squamish, British Columbia, as confirmed by CBC News. The principal of a school in the Sea to Sky School District described her as a beloved and sociable student who will be dearly missed. Additional support, including school counseling, is being provided by the district to assist the community during this difficult time.
Superintendent of Schools Chris Nicholson extended condolences to the family, friends, and school community, expressing deep sadness over the loss of a student from the district. Out of respect for the family’s privacy, further details are not being disclosed currently.
