A team of scientists has successfully reconstructed the genetic codes of woolly mammoths, horses, steppe bison, and ground squirrels that inhabited the grasslands of the Canadian Arctic during the last ice age. This remarkable feat was achieved using DNA extracted from frozen squirrel feces discovered in the Yukon region.
The ancient fecal samples contained a wealth of genetic material from various animals, including wolves, predatory cats, mammoths, horses, birds, bats, grasshoppers, parasitic worms, and over 200 plant species, as detailed in a recent study published in Nature Communications. Tyler Murchie, a researcher at the Hakai Institute in Campbell River, B.C., and the lead author of the study, emphasized the comprehensive insight into the prehistoric ecosystem obtained from these samples.
Ground squirrels in the Arctic have long served as unintentional archivists, depositing a diverse array of organic remnants in their burrows over hundreds of thousands of years. The preserved feces, along with other food fragments found in these burrows, offer a glimpse into the dietary habits of these ancient squirrels, which apparently had a broad diet that included megafauna like mammoths and horses.
The analysis of the DNA extracted from the ancient feces revealed a continuity in the plant and animal species present in the Arctic grasslands over a span of 700,000 years during the Pleistocene epoch. This ecosystem, known as the mammoth steppe, was distinct from the current boreal forest ecosystem found in the same region. The study also indicated that the genetic composition of the modern-day Arctic ground squirrel population in the Yukon differs from their ancient counterparts.
Moreover, the research highlighted the significance of studying past ecological changes to understand the potential impact of current climate change on Arctic wildlife. However, the rapid thawing of permafrost due to climate change poses a threat to the preservation of these invaluable ancient records, emphasizing the urgency of scientific efforts in this area.
