Shia LaBeouf placed on probation for Mardi Gras assault

Date:

Actor Shia LaBeouf has been placed on probation after admitting to assaulting three individuals outside a bar in New Orleans during Mardi Gras. As part of the sentence from an Orleans Parish judge, LaBeouf is required to participate in an alcohol treatment program, confirmed by his attorney, Sarah Chervinsky.

The incident, captured on video on February 17, depicts LaBeouf without a shirt, pushing one person to the ground and striking another in the face, possibly causing a dislocated nose, according to a New Orleans police report. LaBeouf was heard using homophobic slurs during the altercation and upon arrest.

Pleading guilty to three counts of simple battery, LaBeouf received a six-month suspended sentence and two years of probation from Orleans Parish Judge Juana Marine-Lombard. Additionally, he is mandated to maintain distance from the victims and the bar.

Chervinsky expressed LaBeouf’s willingness to take responsibility for his actions, characterizing the incident as a “minor Mardi Gras bar tussle” with no indication of bias. The district attorney, Jason Williams, mentioned consulting with the victims before offering the plea deal to LaBeouf.

Jeffrey Damnit, identified as Jeffrey Klein by the police, recounted being assaulted by LaBeouf and hopes for the actor’s behavioral improvement post substance abuse treatment. Attorney Michael Kennedy emphasized the importance of equality and safety for everyone in New Orleans.

Following his arrest in February, LaBeouf was directed to undergo drug and alcohol rehabilitation. In an interview, he denied having a drinking problem and attributed his aggressive behavior to anger and ego rather than alcohol. LaBeouf’s past encounters with the law, including arrests in New York and Georgia, have been noted.

Amidst his legal issues, LaBeouf settled a lawsuit with singer FKA Twigs, where she accused him of physical and emotional abuse during their relationship. LaBeouf, initially known for his role in the Disney Channel series “Even Stevens,” has faced various legal challenges throughout his career.
