Three young individuals have tragically lost their lives, and a fourth is in critical condition following a single-vehicle accident on a gravel road near Hanover. The victims, all students at John Diefenbaker Senior School in Hanover, were aged between 15 and 17, according to West Grey Police Constable Allyson Iles.
The incident, which occurred on Concession Road 2 SDR near Allan Park Road, resulted in the deaths of three teenagers, including two boys and a girl who were ejected from the vehicle. The fourth teenager, a boy, was extricated from the car by emergency responders and subsequently transported to Hanover District Hospital before being airlifted to London by Ornge air ambulance.
The crash took place around noon, shortly after a Remembrance Day assembly at the school had concluded, with students on their lunch break. Constable Iles described the event as a “heavy day” for all first responders involved.
This tragedy comes just half a year after a previous accident that claimed the lives of four teenagers and a teacher from Walkerton. The community is still reeling from the impact of these back-to-back losses, with families, friends, and the wider community banding together to support one another through this difficult time.
The Bluewater District School Board is dispatching a trauma response team to offer counseling and assistance to those affected by the heartbreaking incident. Hanover Mayor Sue Paterson expressed deep condolences to the families and everyone impacted, emphasizing the community’s solidarity and support during this period of profound grief.
