“Air Pollution Linked to Brain Health Decline: Study”

Exposure to air pollution not only impacts lung health but also has implications for brain health, according to a recent study by a professor at McMaster University. Russell de Souza, from the university’s Department of Health Research Methods, Evidence, and Impact, coauthored a study published in the journal Stroke on May 13. The study, which involved around 7,000 Canadians from various provinces and aged around 57, examined the effects of long-term exposure to common air pollutants on brain health.

The research focused on two main air pollutants: fine particulate matter, commonly found in sources like wildfire smoke and car emissions, and nitrogen dioxide, a gas present in vehicle exhaust. Participants were assessed using cognitive tests to evaluate brain function. The study revealed that higher exposure to these pollutants led to slight declines in brain health, as indicated by lower scores on memory and cognitive tests.

Although the declines were subtle and not immediately noticeable in daily life, de Souza emphasized the importance of early detection to prevent further deterioration. He mentioned that air pollution levels in Canada have generally been low, but recent climate-related events like wildfires have posed challenges to maintaining clean air quality.

De Souza highlighted that areas near airports, highways, and freight yards tend to have higher air pollution levels, advising individuals to stay informed about local air quality advisories. Health Canada suggests indoor measures to reduce exposure to fine particulate matter and nitrogen dioxide, such as proper cleaning, ventilation, and avoiding idling vehicles in enclosed spaces.

The study was part of the Canadian Alliance for Healthy Hearts and Minds initiative, funded by organizations including the Canadian Partnership Against Cancer, the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. There is a call for further research to explore the long-term impact of air pollution on cognitive decline and whether improving air quality can help safeguard brain health in the future.

Overall, the study underscores the importance of monitoring and addressing air pollution to protect both respiratory and cognitive health.
