“ʔAkisq̓nuk First Nation Leads Water Conservation Research”

Date:

The ʔAkisq̓nuk First Nation has initiated a comprehensive series of scientific and economic research projects on Lake Windermere and Columbia Lake as part of a broader water conservation strategy that has triggered discussions regarding recreational boating in the region.

Chief (Nasuʔkin) Donald Sam of ʔAkisq̓nuk emphasized the importance of stewardship to the Ktunaxa people, stating that informed decisions rely on credible data. The First Nation has allocated $200,000 for mapping the East Kootenay lakes, evaluating shoreline conditions, sediment movements, and assessing the economic significance of recreational activities on the lakes.

While the stewardship talks have raised concerns among some locals fearing potential limitations impacting the economy, Chief Sam clarified that the objective is not to hinder economic progress. Rather, the aim is to identify sustainable recreational practices that align with the long-term well-being of the lakes.

The research initiatives coincide with heightened scrutiny of wake-surfing boats, which are criticized for causing sediment disturbance, shoreline erosion, and environmental harm in smaller lakes like Lake Windermere and Columbia Lake, known for their shallow depths and susceptibility to wake disruption.

Addressing the issue, Mayor Al Miller of the District of Invermere expressed support for a science-based approach, emphasizing the need to balance environmental considerations with economic impacts. He stressed the importance of leveraging data to make well-informed decisions rather than relying on hearsay.

Chief Sam reiterated that the stewardship planning process is in its early phases, assuring that there are no immediate plans for restrictions this summer. The focus is on information sharing, gathering community input, and conducting public engagement activities to develop a lake stewardship plan that harmonizes environmental protection with economic growth for the future.
