These colorful lights, installed by vegetable and cannabis producers in the region over the past decade, have not only illuminated the night sky but also significantly impacted the local agriculture industry, which is worth billions of dollars.
The bright glow, emanating from the region, has garnered both admiration and concern, leading local communities to introduce regulations to control the greenhouse lights’ brightness after dark. Richard Lee, the executive director of the Ontario Greenhouse Vegetable Growers, acknowledges that the rapid adoption of this technology posed challenges in addressing the perceived nuisances caused by the intense glow.
Efforts to minimize light spillage into the sky have been partially successful, but the luminous hue is still visible across the region and even from the International Space Station. Starr Livingstone from the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada’s Windsor chapter highlights the impact of this light pollution on their observatory but notes that improvements have been made compared to the previous situation.
The proliferation of greenhouses in Kingsville and Leamington, as shown in recent satellite images by NASA, has been attributed to various factors, including the legalization of cannabis in Canada and the adoption of advanced lighting technology for year-round plant growth. This expansion has not only increased the efficiency of crop production but has also played a crucial role in ensuring food security, especially during disruptions like the COVID-19 pandemic.
However, the rapid implementation of grow light technology has faced criticism due to environmental concerns, particularly in a region known for its unique ecosystems and migratory paths for birds and butterflies. In response to these concerns, bylaws have been enacted in both Kingsville and Leamington to address the escalating issue of light pollution from the greenhouses.
Leamington’s light abatement bylaw mandates the use of light-blocking curtains and specifies restricted operating hours for the greenhouse lights, while Kingsville has taken a stricter approach by disallowing any curtain opening. Enforcement efforts have been intensified, with instances of non-compliance leading to penalties. Nevertheless, challenges remain in achieving complete light abatement due to the necessity of ventilation for the plants.
Despite ongoing efforts to mitigate light pollution, some challenges persist, such as variations in curtain effectiveness and external factors like weather conditions and moonlight. William Lubitz, an engineering professor at the University of Guelph, emphasizes the importance of balancing agricultural productivity with environmental considerations to address the concerns raised by the local communities effectively.
