“English-Born Goalkeeper Officially Becomes Canadian Citizen”

Date:

Owen Goodman has always felt a strong connection to Canada, despite being born in England. To qualify for the men’s national soccer team, he had to demonstrate his Canadian ties.

Last month, the 21-year-old goalkeeper, who resided in Alliston, Ont., for eight years during his childhood, received an email from his immigration lawyer in Toronto requesting a Zoom call. Initially, he thought it was a routine update on his citizenship application, which had been a long and challenging process.

The call, however, brought the news he had been eagerly awaiting: His childhood residency in Canada officially made him a Canadian citizen. Goodman is currently in Toronto for his first senior international stint with the national team, which includes a friendly match against Ecuador at BMO Field on Thursday.

Reflecting on the momentous call, Goodman expressed his overwhelming joy and gratitude. He promptly shared the news with his English father and Nigerian mother, both of whom had witnessed his journey through call-ups from various national teams during his youth career.

After completing most of the requirements, including taking his Oath of Citizenship in Canada, Goodman, who plays for Huddersfield Town on loan from Crystal Palace, swiftly returned to England to resume his club commitments.

The sudden conclusion of his citizenship journey left Goodman feeling like he had won a final match, a deeply fulfilling moment for him.

Part of Goodman’s case for Canadian citizenship was his fond memories of childhood in Canada, including his favorite Tim Horton’s order. Despite other national team offers, he remained steadfast in his desire to represent Canada on the international stage.

As the decision looms for the starting goalkeeper position for Canada at the upcoming World Cup, Coach Jesse Marsch faces a challenging choice between Dayne St. Clair and Maxime Crépeau. Both goalkeepers have displayed commendable skills and attributes, making it a tough decision for Marsch.

While Goodman acknowledges the competitive landscape for the starting role, he remains grateful for the opportunity to be part of the national team setup. His aspirations extend beyond the upcoming World Cup, with eyes set on potential inclusion in future tournaments.

Aiming for excellence at the highest level, Goodman is determined to pursue his dreams diligently, showcasing his talent and commitment to the sport.
