Rapper Rob Base of “It Takes Two” Fame Dies at 59

Rob Base, a renowned rapper and one part of the famous Harlem hip-hop duo Rob Base & DJ E-Z Rock, has passed away at the age of 59 following a battle with cancer. Known by his real name Robert Ginyard, Base gained fame for his hit song “It Takes Two” in 1988, which seamlessly blended hip-hop and house music, making a significant impact on both genres and bringing them to a wider audience.

An announcement on his Instagram confirmed his death, praising Rob Base for his music, vibrant personality, and lasting influence on a generation worldwide. Described as a devoted father, family man, friend, and influential creative force, Base’s legacy is set to endure for years to come.

His musical partner, Rodney (Skip) Bryce, also known as DJ E-Z Rock, passed away in 2014 at 46 due to complications from diabetes. The duo first crossed paths as fifth-grade students in Harlem, New York City, drawing inspiration from the success of the Crash Crew, a fellow Harlem-based music group. Their collaboration led them to sign with Profile Records in 1987, a pioneering label in the hip-hop scene at the time.

Their breakout track, “It Takes Two,” made waves in 1988, climbing the Billboard Hot 100 and peaking at No. 3 on the Hot Dance/Club Songs chart. The song’s popularity led to numerous samples by artists like Snoop Dogg and the Black Eyed Peas, as well as its inclusion in various films. It garnered platinum certification from the Recording Industry Association of America.

Following the success of “It Takes Two,” the duo released another hit single, “Get on the Dance Floor,” which achieved similar acclaim on the club songs chart. Rob Base’s contributions to the music industry and his enduring impact on fans worldwide will be remembered for years to come.
