Pitchers Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz face charges of wire fraud conspiracy, bribery, and money laundering for allegedly accepting bribes to alter their pitching performances.
Ortiz and Clase are accused of receiving payoffs to influence specific pitch outcomes, assisting bettors in winning significant amounts through prop bets placed on pitch speed and results. Both players have been on non-disciplinary paid leave since July when MLB flagged unusual betting patterns during their games earlier in the season.
Ortiz, who was arrested at Boston Logan International Airport, has denied the allegations, asserting that his financial transactions in the Dominican Republic were legitimate. Clase, currently believed to be outside the U.S., has not made any public statements regarding the charges. The Guardians have pledged full cooperation with MLB and law enforcement investigations into the matter.
