There is a surprising number of Spotify users who are not fans of the new disco ball icon. The temporary replacement of the traditional green-and-black mobile app logo with a shiny 3D mirrorball to commemorate Spotify’s 20th anniversary has sparked widespread online criticism.
Instead of being celebrated, the change has triggered a wave of negative reactions from users who liken it to controversial topics like pineapple on pizza or the word “moist.” Some users have described the 3D logo as unattractive or pixelated, with one even suggesting the designer responsible should be fired. Another user went as far as to say the new icon makes them want to uninstall Spotify.
Despite the backlash, a different group of users has defended the new logo and criticized the critics as “haters.” They also expressed dissatisfaction with the overall trend towards minimalist design.
Amidst the chaos, social media managers from other brands jumped in by creating their disco ball-inspired logos to join the conversation.
In response to concerns about readability and branding issues raised by a user, Spotify clarified that the disco ball logo is only a temporary change for their anniversary celebration.
“It’s our birthday, so we’re in a festive mood, but we’ll return to our usual look once the celebration is over,” a spokesperson reassured users in an online statement on Sunday.
“We understand that not everyone is a fan of glitter,” Spotify acknowledged in another social media post.
“Our temporary makeover will end soon, and the regular Spotify icon will be back next week.”
