A wild dog successfully swam three kilometers across ocean currents in an extraordinary feat that captured the attention of wildlife enthusiasts. Camilla Fox, the founder of Project Coyote, expressed her amazement at the “Alcatraz Coyote’s” remarkable journey, stating that she had never heard of such a tale involving a coyote navigating major ocean currents.
The male coyote’s adventure began when it paddled across the San Francisco Bay to Alcatraz Island earlier this year. Initially believed to have swum from San Francisco, approximately 1.6 kilometers away, researchers later discovered that the coyote had actually embarked on a longer journey from Angel Island, a state park in California.
Witnesses shared pictures and videos of the coyote on January 24, describing its appearance as bedraggled and likening it to a drowned rat as it struggled to reach the rocky shoreline of Alcatraz. While scientists confirmed the coyote’s arrival on the island, the exact reason for its journey remains a mystery.
Fox speculated that the coyote may have been seeking a mate or new territory, driven by biological instincts. Despite concerns about the coyote’s well-being after the strenuous swim, Fox highlighted the resilience and adaptability of wild animals, emphasizing their ability to leave humans in awe with their actions.
Alcatraz Island, once home to the infamous federal penitentiary, now serves as a conservation area for a diverse ecosystem of seabirds and marine life. Wildlife ecology professor Joel Berger suggested that the coyote might have sought sanctuary on the island after facing aggression in its previous habitat.
Coyotes, native to North America, play a crucial role in ecosystems, but are often misunderstood and persecuted. Fox emphasized the importance of educating the public about the significance of apex predators like coyotes and promoting peaceful coexistence with wildlife.
Ongoing research at the University of California Davis aims to study the DNA of coyotes around Angel Island and San Francisco to gain a better understanding of their behaviors and movements. The coyote that swam to Alcatraz is part of a group of 14 that colonized Angel Island, paving the way for further exploration into their behaviors and habitat choices.
