Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on Friday that his chief of staff, Andriy Yermak, has tendered his resignation in the midst of a corruption scandal. Yermak’s residence was searched by Ukrainian anti-corruption agencies on Friday morning, with him stating full cooperation with the investigators.
Despite not being identified as a criminal suspect, there were calls from opposition lawmakers and some members of Zelenskyy’s party for Yermak’s dismissal, marking a challenging period for Kyiv. This situation coincides with U.S. pressure on Ukraine to negotiate with Moscow to end the ongoing conflict, while lacking the military capacity to repel Russian forces.
Zelenskyy emphasized in a video message that Ukraine will not succumb to pressure and will continue its efforts without making any mistakes. The recent turmoil in Ukraine stemmed from an alleged scheme to manipulate contracts at a state-owned nuclear company, involving substantial sums of money in kickbacks and illicit financial transactions aimed at safeguarding energy infrastructure from Russian attacks.
Earlier this month, the Justice Minister and Energy Minister, German Galushchenko and Svitlana Hrynchuk, respectively, resigned from their positions amidst similar allegations, denying any wrongdoing. The National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office confirmed that the searches at Yermak’s premises were part of an authorized investigation.
Yermak, a pivotal figure in U.S. relations, remains significant as Russian forces advance along the front line. Russian President Vladimir Putin suggested that a leaked U.S. peace plan could serve as a basis for future agreements, demanding Kyiv to withdraw its troops from eastern territories before any cessation of hostilities.
While Yermak has been instrumental in coordinating peace negotiations and prisoner exchanges, he has faced skepticism due to his influential position without an electoral mandate. Despite public distrust, he has been a crucial liaison with U.S. administrations, advocating for support against Moscow.
