The two men, Al-Muntasir Abdullah, 26, and Yousef Asasa, 37, were killed on Thursday during a raid in the Israeli-occupied West Bank. Palestinian TV footage revealed that the men seemed to be surrendering and unarmed. The Israeli military and police have initiated an investigation, stating that they fired towards suspects who emerged from a building.
Mahmoud Asasa, the brother of Yousef, expressed shock at the killing, emphasizing that a person surrendering should be arrested and not executed in such a brutal manner. The Palestinian Islamic Jihad group claimed that one of the men was a commander and the other a fighter.
Israeli authorities described the two men as wanted individuals associated with a “terror network in the area of Jenin,” without specifying the accusations or presenting evidence of their alleged involvement.
The UN human rights office raised concerns over the escalating killings of Palestinians by Israeli security forces and settlers in the West Bank, emphasizing the importance of accountability and due process. Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir supported the military and police involved in the shooting, stating that terrorists should be eliminated.
The international community has been urged to intervene as internal investigations may not lead to accountability for policymakers responsible for such actions. The Palestinian Authority’s Foreign Ministry condemned the incident as an “extrajudicial killing” and a war crime.
