Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre stated on Wednesday that he is not contemplating any changes to his leadership style following the departure of two MPs from his caucus. One of the MPs mentioned the leader’s “negative” political approach as the reason for leaving the party. During a press conference in Calgary, Poilievre responded to questions by referencing previous comments made by Nova Scotia MP Chris d’Entremont, who switched to the Liberals.
When asked if the departures reflect on his leadership or have caused him to reconsider his approach, Poilievre firmly answered in the negative. He emphasized his commitment to leading the fight for an affordable Canada where hardworking individuals can afford housing and food.
Regarding allegations that the Conservative party operates like “a frat house” rather than a serious political entity, Poilievre pointed to d’Entremont’s previous statements in the House of Commons about Liberal policies on food inflation.
In a separate interview with CBC News, d’Entremont accused two senior Conservatives of confronting him aggressively in his office and referred to as “a snake,” which he claimed influenced his decision to defect to the Liberals. However, Conservative House leader Andrew Scheer and the party’s whip, Chris Warkentin, disputed this account, acknowledging the use of the term “snake” but asserting they approached the situation calmly.
Poilievre’s spokesperson dismissed d’Entremont’s claims, labeling him a “liar” who aligns well with other allegedly dishonest Liberals. Despite d’Entremont previously criticizing the cost of living under Liberal governance, he ultimately joined the Liberals, supporting Prime Minister Mark Carney’s stance on the carbon tax.
In response to Poilievre’s criticisms, d’Entremont accused the Conservatives of misrepresenting facts. Two days after d’Entremont’s decision, Conservative MP Matt Jeneroux also announced his resignation from politics, further unsettling the Conservative Party.
The recent departures have reportedly caused concern within the Conservative Party, potentially benefiting the minority Liberal government by providing more flexibility to advance its legislative agenda. Poilievre urged the media to give attention to Liberal MP Nathaniel Erskine-Smith’s critiques of the government’s latest budget.
Amid the evolving dynamics, Poilievre maintained his stance and expressed skepticism about the media’s focus on the turmoil within the party and its implications.
