“Public Health Urges Vigilance in Tick Checks Year-Round”

Date:

Amid growing concerns about encountering ticks, Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health has issued updated guidance, indicating that people should be vigilant about tick checks after spending time outdoors in temperatures above 0 degrees Celsius. Phil Wong, overseeing health protection operations at the health unit, revealed that a surveillance program revealed an expansion in tick encounters beyond wooded trails.

The new guidance emphasizes three main areas of concern: parks, trails, and camping sites with long grass, private properties at homes, and occupational exposures for outdoor workers. Surprisingly, many people reported finding ticks in their gardens or while raking leaves at home, rather than just in long grassy areas.

Although parents need not worry about ticks on playgrounds, as ticks prefer damp areas and avoid direct sunlight, it is still recommended to conduct tick checks on children after they return indoors. Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health updated their tick guidance due to the increasing local tick population and the anticipated influx of ticks from the United States.

Health Canada reports over 40 tick species in Canada, some native while others introduced through hosts like birds and deer. Certain ticks, like the Western blacklegged tick, can transmit Lyme disease, while the lone star tick may cause a meat allergy. Recent initiatives such as the Canadian Tick Research and Innovation Centre and the G Magnotta Lyme Disease Research Lab aim to enhance tick-related disease studies.

Justin Wood, a Lyme disease survivor and scientist, stresses the importance of early diagnosis and intervention. He highlights the misconception that ticks die off during cold winters, clarifying that ticks hibernate in leaf litter, posing a persistent risk throughout the year. Public health encourages online reporting of tick encounters for tracking purposes, reinforcing the message that enjoying outdoor activities is safe as long as tick checks are conducted upon returning indoors.
