Firefighters in Hong Kong are close to completing search and rescue operations following a devastating blaze at a high-rise apartment complex that claimed the lives of at least 94 individuals. The fire, one of the deadliest in the city’s recent history, also left over 70 people injured, including 11 firefighters.
The Fire Services Department of Hong Kong reported that efforts to contain the blaze were largely successful, with firefighters focusing on specific apartments within the charred towers of the Wang Fuk Court complex. Despite ongoing challenges like thick smoke emanating from certain windows, authorities expressed confidence in fully extinguishing the fire within the next few hours.
Rescuers equipped with flashlights diligently combed through the buildings, ensuring all units were thoroughly checked for any remaining casualties. While the exact number of missing or trapped individuals was unclear, contact was lost with 279 people early on Thursday. Efforts to locate and assist those affected continued amidst the charred remnants of the complex.
The fire, believed to have originated in bamboo scaffolding and construction netting, rapidly spread across multiple buildings within the complex. As firefighters battled the intense flames, evacuation efforts led to the temporary relocation of approximately 900 individuals to shelters. The grim toll of the tragedy included one firefighter among the deceased.
Authorities also arrested three individuals associated with a construction company on suspicion of manslaughter, citing potential negligence in ensuring fire safety standards. Investigations revealed materials on the building’s exterior that may not have met required fire resistance levels, contributing to the rapid spread of the fire.
