Residents Demand Action Against Dofasco’s Air Pollution

Date:

Residents in Hamilton, including Jochen Bezner, are calling for accountability from ArcelorMittal Dofasco due to concerns over emissions exceeding Ontario’s air-quality regulations. Bezner, a member of Dofasco’s community liaison committee, along with others, has urged the Ministry of the Environment, Climate and Parks (MECP) to investigate the steelmaker for allegedly emitting harmful pollutants above regulatory limits.

Despite the city already grappling with high levels of cancer-causing contaminants, Bezner emphasized the need for Dofasco to be environmentally responsible to safeguard public health. Ecojustice, an environmental law charity, and a local lawyer have officially filed the investigation request.

The steel giant, surrounded by densely populated neighborhoods, is under scrutiny for emitting excessive levels of cancer-causing pollutants, according to Ecojustice’s recent statement. Previously operating under special exemptions allowing higher emissions, Dofasco’s exemptions lapsed in June 2023 without renewal. This has left the company in a regulatory “grey zone,” potentially constituting non-compliance.

Ecojustice revealed that Dofasco’s emissions report for 2023, obtained through a freedom-of-information request, demonstrated significant exceedances of allowable levels for several pollutants. The company’s failure to meet decarbonization targets by 2028 is also raising concerns among residents and environmental advocates.

MECP is expected to respond to the investigation request in the coming months, as stakeholders await decisive action to address the emission issues. The company maintains its commitment to compliance but faces pressure to accelerate efforts to reduce emissions and meet environmental standards.

Residents like Bezner hope that stricter regulations and oversight will prompt Dofasco to take more proactive measures towards environmental stewardship. Amid ongoing challenges, including high U.S. tariffs impacting the steel industry, the future trajectory of Dofasco’s operations remains uncertain.
