Britney Spears, aged 44, faced charges in California for driving under the influence of both drugs and alcohol, according to the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office. The star was charged with a single misdemeanour count for driving under the combined influence of alcohol and at least one drug. The charges did not specify the type or quantity of substances involved.
After being arrested on March 4 for allegedly driving her black BMW recklessly on U.S. 101, Spears, who appeared impaired, underwent field sobriety tests and was taken into custody on suspicion of driving under the influence of a mix of alcohol and drugs. Following her arrest, she entered a substance abuse treatment program.
Subsequently, Spears was released on bail the day after her arrest, and the police concluded their investigation, presenting the case to prosecutors on March 23. Her arraignment is scheduled for Monday, but she is not required to attend in person due to the misdemeanour nature of the charge.
Throughout her career, Britney Spears, once a popular figure in the 1990s and 2000s with hit songs like “Toxic” and “Oops! … I Did It Again,” has faced public scrutiny and mental health challenges. In 2008, she was placed under a conservatorship managed primarily by her father, a situation that continued for over a decade until it was terminated in 2021. Despite releasing a bestselling memoir and a few collaborative singles in recent years, Spears has mostly stepped back from her music career.
