Russian forces carried out a significant drone assault on the southeastern Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia late on Tuesday, causing fires, injuring 12 individuals, and causing extensive damage to buildings and vehicles, according to the regional governor. Ivan Fedorov, communicating via the Telegram messaging app, reported that the attack resulted in wrecked cars, ruined shops, and the destruction of seven apartment complexes. He mentioned that 12 individuals were receiving medical treatment in hospitals.
“A coordinated rescue operation is presently underway at 12 separate locations,” Fedorov stated in a video shared online. He added, “A substantial number of units from the State Emergency Services, national police, and our medical teams have been mobilized.”
Images posted on the internet depicted firefighters battling blazes at tall residential buildings and charred vehicles on the city’s roads. Emergency services, communicating through Telegram, confirmed that they were successfully containing the fires and carrying out rescue missions.
A portion of the broader region is currently under Russian control, with Russian forces holding significant territories in the Zaporizhzhia region and having recently made advances. However, the city itself remains under Ukrainian authority. Yevgeny Belitsky, the Russia-appointed leader of the Russian-controlled Zaporizhzhia region, reported that Ukrainian forces had targeted power grid infrastructure in areas under Russian control.
Belitsky, in a Telegram post, disclosed that power had been disrupted for 40,000 customers in towns controlled by Russia within the region. The conflict between Russia and Ukraine has been ongoing since Russia initiated a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, leading to a state of continuous warfare between the two nations. Throughout the conflict, both Ukraine and Russia have increasingly utilized drones, necessitating adaptations to confront the changing battlefield dynamics and the emerging threats posed by hostile drones.
