Nedra Talley Ross, the final remaining member of the 1960s iconic group the Ronettes, known for hits like “Be My Baby,” “Baby I Love You,” and “Walking in the Rain,” has passed away at the age of 80. The sad news was confirmed by her daughter, Nedra K. Ross, and the official Instagram account of the Ronettes.
Ross, who contributed immensely to the group’s distinctive sound, passed away at her residence on Sunday. The Ronettes, with their captivating appearance and remarkable vocals, became a prominent figure in the girl-group era with the assistance of Phil Spector in songwriting and production. They even toured alongside the Rolling Stones in England and developed a friendship with the Beatles.
During her Rock & Roll Hall of Fame acceptance speech in 2007, Ross reflected on the highs and lows of show business, emphasizing the importance of having a supportive family during challenging times. She expressed gratitude for the memorable experiences she had during that period.
Originating from New York City, Ross, along with her sisters Veronica “Ronnie” and Estelle Bennett, released their debut album, “Presenting the Fabulous Ronettes, Featuring Veronica,” in 1964. The album produced multiple chart-topping tracks and earned a place in Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.
Their musical journey began in March 1963 when Estelle Bennett arranged an audition with Phil Spector, leading to their signing with Philles Records. The group gained fame with hits like “Be My Baby” and “Baby I Love You,” which left a lasting impact on popular culture.
Following the disbandment of the Ronettes, Ross transitioned to Christian music and released the album “Full Circle” in 1978. She was married to DJ and TV personality Scott Ross until his passing in 2023. Despite their success, the Ronettes faced legal battles over royalties for nearly 15 years, ultimately ending in an unsuccessful court decision in 2002.
Ross is survived by four children. Her fellow Ronettes bandmates, Ronnie Spector and Estelle Bennett, passed away in 2022 and 2009, respectively, marking the end of an era for the beloved girl group.
