Tensions are running high due to soaring grocery prices, limited affordable meal options, and holiday spending stress, leading to strong reactions to a lawsuit alleging Campbell’s executive disparaged its own canned soup as food for “poor people.”
The lawsuit, filed by a former Campbell’s security analyst, accuses the company’s chief information security officer, Martin Bally, of inappropriate conduct. Allegations include racist remarks and derogatory comments about Campbell’s products being for the less affluent.
According to court documents filed in Michigan, plaintiff Robert Garza claims Bally made offensive comments during a salary discussion, including racist remarks and disparaging remarks about Campbell’s products. Garza allegedly recorded a video of Bally making derogatory comments, which has not been independently confirmed.
Campbell’s has placed Bally on temporary leave pending an internal investigation and refutes the claims about its products, asserting that the accused individual is not involved in food production. The company emphasizes its commitment to using real ingredients and denies using bioengineered or artificial meat in its soups.
The lawsuit has sparked outrage on social media, with customers expressing disgust and some vowing to boycott Campbell’s products. Garza, who was allegedly terminated for reporting the inappropriate conduct, seeks damages for wrongful termination.
Garza’s lawyer highlighted the impact on his client, expressing hope for justice in the case. Campbell’s has not directly addressed the termination allegation but stated that the reported comments do not align with the company’s values.
