Kremlin figure Kirill Dmitriev, known for his ties to Vladimir Putin and controversial reputation, has recently been involved in U.S. negotiations to resolve the conflict in Ukraine. A meeting held in Miami last month included Dmitriev, U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff, and Jared Kushner, son-in-law of former President Donald Trump, to discuss a plan to end the fighting.
Dmitriev, 50, a Moscow businessman with a background in Western education, has worked at top firms like Goldman Sachs and McKinsey & Company. He returned to Russia in 2011 to head the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), one of the country’s largest sovereign wealth funds.
His connection to Putin dates back to the early 2000s, and his marriage to Natalia Popova, a close friend of Putin’s daughter, has strengthened his position within Putin’s inner circle. However, in 2022, the U.S. government sanctioned Dmitriev and RDIF following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, citing his influence as a representative for Putin in American institutions.
Despite being labeled a “Russian propagandist” by some, Dmitriev’s role in U.S.-Russia talks has raised concerns within the intelligence community. Critics have questioned the peace plan’s alignment with Russian interests, including demands for Ukraine to cede territory and limit military capabilities.
Dmitriev’s past interactions with the Trump administration have earned him the moniker “the Trump whisperer.” His efforts to improve U.S.-Russia relations have been noted, although some see him as more of a messenger than an influential figure. His experience and connections have positioned him as a key player in diplomatic discussions between the two nations.
