Veteran journalist and current host of “Metro Morning” radio show, David Common, is set to take over as the new host of “CBC Morning Live,” replacing Heather Hiscox as announced by the public broadcaster on Thursday. Hiscox’s final broadcast marked the end of her nationwide tour as host, a position she held for two decades.
In a recent interview, Common discussed his vision for the show, aiming to tackle the evolving television landscape and combat the growing disinterest in news while maintaining journalistic integrity. He emphasized the importance of balancing serious news with lighter content to engage and inform viewers without overwhelming them.
Originally from Winnipeg, Common transitioned from aspiring to be a nurse to a distinguished journalism career after an encounter with Peter Mansbridge in his youth. His extensive experience includes reporting from over 90 countries and serving in various hosting roles at CBC, such as hosting “World Report” and “Marketplace.”
Common expressed excitement and anticipation for the challenges of his new role, recognizing the shifting media landscape and emphasizing the need to adapt to reach audiences across different platforms beyond television. CBC News Network’s managing editor, Mark Ross, highlighted the upcoming evolution of “Morning Live” to align with Common’s strengths and engage viewers in a more personal and authentic manner.
Under Hiscox’s leadership, “Morning Live” received accolades, including Canadian Screen Awards for best national news anchor and best morning show. The show’s focus on live and breaking news coverage will continue, with preparations underway to tailor the program to Common’s unique skills and style.
Common’s tenure on “Metro Morning” will conclude on January 16, 2026, before he assumes his new role on “Morning Live” starting February 2. In the interim, guest anchors will fill in on “Morning Live” until Common’s official start date, while the search for the next host of “Metro Morning” is ongoing.
