However, a recent incident in Richmond, B.C.’s Steveston neighborhood brought a unique situation to light.
Alex Ritz, the owner of Skedaddle Humane Wildlife Control, received a rare call to relocate a group of otter pups found on a residential property. This was a first-of-its-kind experience for Ritz, as otters are not typically encountered in such scenarios.
The discovery took place near the Steveston wharf, a common area for otters seeking food as fishing boats bring in fresh catches. The homeowners had noticed an otter roaming around the property, carrying nesting materials and disappearing behind a shed.
Upon investigation, a wildlife expert confirmed the presence of otters under the shed. Ritz’s team carefully located and rescued three otter pups, ensuring their safety by placing them in a heated box for their mother to retrieve them. Preventative measures were then taken to secure the shed and prevent future otter intrusions.
Despite being cute, river otters can be messy and emit a strong odor that marks their territories. While their presence indicates a healthy environment, it is advised to leave otters undisturbed if found on private property, especially if they have recently given birth. Properly securing access points can help prevent future encounters with otters.
