On a memorable night, Taylor Heise and Abbey Murphy showcased their skills, scoring a total of four goals in Team USA women’s hockey thrilling 4-1 victory over Canada in the Rivalry Series opener. Despite their stellar performance, Heise and Murphy humbly redirected the attention to their teammate, Laila Edwards, affectionately dubbed the “Queen of Cleveland.”
During her homecoming game, 21-year-old Edwards stole the show, receiving thunderous cheers from the crowd when her name was announced. She was invited by team captain Hilary Knight to partake in the ceremonial opening faceoff against Canada’s captain, Marie-Philip Poulin. Edwards further made her mark by providing the primary assist on Team USA’s opening goal.
Reflecting on the moment, Edwards described feeling the electric atmosphere as her shot was deflected in by Heise, equalizing the score at 1 in the first period. A forward-turned-defenseman from Cleveland Heights, Edwards holds the distinction of being the first Black female player to represent Team USA.
Despite nursing a knee injury sustained in a college game three weeks prior, Edwards persevered and contributed significantly to the team’s success. Her resilience and talent did not go unnoticed, with teammates like Murphy acknowledging her deserving of the spotlight and the support of her hometown.
Heise played a pivotal role in the match, notching goals and assisting on all three of Murphy’s scores. Aerin Frankel, the projected starting goalkeeper for the U.S., made 26 crucial saves, securing the team’s third consecutive win against their Canadian rivals. This winning streak traces back to their triumph over Canada at the world championships in the Czech Republic, including a thrilling 4-3 overtime victory in the championship game.
Sarah Fillier managed to score the lone goal for Canada, with Eve Gascon making her national team debut and stopping 22 shots in goal. The upcoming games in Buffalo and Edmonton will continue the intense four-game series between these hockey powerhouses.
As the Americans defend their world championship title, the Canadians are the reigning Olympic champions, having clinched their fifth gold medal at the 2022 Beijing Games. Fillier expressed the team’s determination to learn from their defeat and bounce back in the next game in Buffalo.
Following a back-and-forth scoring exchange, highlighted by goals from Fillier and Heise, Murphy’s impressive performance in the second period sealed the victory for Team USA. Edwards, with her remarkable journey and achievements, is poised to make her Olympic debut at the upcoming Milan-Cortina Games in February.
Coach John Wroblewski commended Edwards for her poise under pressure, emphasizing her natural talent and competitive spirit. Despite her accomplishments, Edwards admitted to being starstruck when NBA player Larry Nance Jr. sported her USA hockey jersey at a Cleveland Cavaliers game, underscoring the impact of her growing influence and recognition in the sports world.
