“AI Firm Deactivates Models Amid U.S. Security Concerns”

Date:

AI company Anthropic announced on Friday that it has deactivated its newest artificial intelligence models, Fable 5 and Mythos 5, in compliance with a directive from the Trump administration to prevent their utilization by foreign individuals. This move represents a significant measure by the U.S. government to limit access to cutting-edge AI models. While Anthropic publicly released Fable this week, the more advanced Mythos model has restricted access due to cybersecurity concerns.

In response to the directive received from the U.S. administration, Anthropic expressed disagreement with the government’s approach, highlighting the lack of specified national security concerns. The company emphasized the importance of a transparent and technically grounded statutory process to address unsafe AI deployments.

Anthropic described the situation as a “misunderstanding” and expressed its intentions to reinstate access to the models promptly. The Commerce Department did not provide an immediate response to requests for comments regarding this matter.

This action follows President Donald Trump’s recent executive order, which established a framework for the federal government to evaluate national security risks associated with advanced AI systems before their public release. Anthropic had previously acknowledged that Mythos’ capacity to identify software vulnerabilities on a large scale could pose substantial risks if misused, impacting economies, public safety, and national security.

Bank of Canada governor Tiff Macklem highlighted discussions surrounding Mythos during the International Monetary Fund’s spring meetings, emphasizing the ongoing need for firms, regulators, and policymakers to develop strategies to address the challenges posed by rapidly evolving AI technologies. Macklem underscored the critical importance of robust cybersecurity measures to mitigate the vulnerabilities inherent in advanced AI models.

Whether it is Mythos or any other AI model, the development and deployment of these technologies underscore the necessity for proactive cybersecurity measures to safeguard against potential threats.
