“U.K. Government Moves to Ban Ticket Scalping”

Date:

The U.K. government is taking steps to combat the reselling of tickets at inflated prices for entertainment and sports events. The proposed legislation aims to make it illegal to resell tickets for live events above their original face value. This move comes in response to concerns raised by artists like Coldplay and Dua Lipa about the unfair practices of ticket scalpers.

According to the government, these measures could potentially save fans around £112 million annually and lead to 900,000 more tickets being sold directly by primary sellers each year. The regulations will apply to all platforms selling tickets to U.K. fans, including social media platforms like Facebook Marketplace.

Adam Webb from the Fan Fair Alliance in London, which advocates against online scalping, believes that the new rules will target the illicit activities of scalpers who acquire tickets at face value and then resell them at exorbitant prices. Despite the positive outlook, Webb emphasizes the need for the legislation to be enforced to bring about real change in the ticket market.

The impact of these regulations in Canada remains to be seen, with Vass Bednar of the Canadian Shield Institute acknowledging the U.K.’s progress in addressing ticket pricing issues. However, music industry expert Eric Alper warns that capping ticket resale could inadvertently drive transactions to underground channels, potentially evading legal restrictions.

Webb urges the public to push for the swift implementation of the legislation in the U.K., emphasizing the financial losses incurred by fans and the creative industry due to exploitative ticket reselling practices. Bednar expresses concerns over the escalating ticket prices that are making cultural experiences like sports events less accessible to average families in Canada.
