“Narrow Victory: Tordjman Wins Cote Saint-Luc Mayoral Race by 1 Vote”

Date:

After a recent tally, Elections Quebec has announced that David Tordjman has emerged victorious in the mayoral election in Cote Saint-Luc, narrowly edging out long-standing incumbent Mitchell Brownstein by just one vote. Tordjman secured 4,196 votes, equivalent to 50.01 percent, while Brownstein garnered 4,195 votes, making up 49.99 percent of the total count. The voter turnout stood at 36.9 percent, with 8,391 valid votes cast and 229 rejected out of 23,359 registered voters.

Prior to his mayoral win, Tordjman served as the city councillor for District 6 from 2017 to 2021, where he lost his re-election bid in 2021. He is a civil engineer by profession and currently holds the position of general manager at the Nunavik Investment Corporation. Tordjman has a background of working closely with First Nations communities on various infrastructure and development initiatives. Additionally, he dedicates his time as the president of the Friendship Circle of Montreal, a non-profit organization that aids children and young adults with disabilities.

On the other hand, Brownstein, a practicing lawyer, was elected to the city council in 1990 and assumed the mayoral office in 2016. Following the narrow defeat, Lawrence Bergman, who led Brownstein’s campaign, announced that they will be requesting a recount. Bergman highlighted discrepancies in the vote count, stating that Brownstein was initially leading by 50 votes on Sunday evening but later lost 38 votes, while Tordjman gained 13 votes on Monday, a situation that does not align with their calculations.

According to an Elections Quebec spokesperson, there is no automatic recount process for tight races; however, candidates have the option to request a recount within four days of the election results being certified. Further statements from Brownstein’s camp will be withheld until the recount request is formally addressed.
