The inaugural Asian edition of the renowned music competition Eurovision is set to take place in Bangkok later this year.
Organizers have confirmed the participation of at least 10 Asian countries in the event, including Thailand, South Korea, the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Cambodia, Laos, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Bhutan, with more countries anticipated to join before the grand finale in November.
Expressing excitement about the milestone, Martin Green, the contest’s director, emphasized the significance of launching this new chapter in Asia, a region known for its rich culture, creativity, and talent.
Highlighting Bangkok’s vibrant cultural scene, Chuwit Sirivajjakul from the Thailand Tourism Authority emphasized the city’s history of bringing together diverse cultures through music and celebration.
The Eurovision Song Contest, organized by the European Broadcasting Union, attracts over 100 million viewers worldwide annually.
This year’s main Eurovision competition, featuring 35 countries, is scheduled to be hosted in Vienna in May. Notably, Iceland, Ireland, the Netherlands, Slovenia, and Spain have opted out in protest of Israel’s participation, citing political disagreements.
While Eurovision aims to remain apolitical, it has faced challenges in maintaining this stance. In 2022, Russia was expelled from the competition following its military actions in Ukraine.
The Eurovision Song Contest has also been impacted by global conflicts, notably during the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza, leading to protests and stricter regulations on political displays at the event venues.
Anticipating potential challenges, such as those seen in the European version, the Asian edition of Eurovision could face geopolitical tensions, as seen in instances like the border clashes between Thailand and Cambodia in recent years.
