In the outskirts of China’s Gobi Desert, advanced wind turbine facilities utilizing artificial intelligence are generating electricity more affordably than coal power. The innovator behind this technology, Lei Zhang, envisions replicating this model in remote Canadian regions. Zhang, the billionaire founder of Envision, a prominent green energy company in Shanghai, is renowned for his ability to inspire enthusiasm for futuristic energy concepts and turn them into reality.
During a visit to Envision’s headquarters in China, Zhang shared proposals aimed at addressing Canada’s upcoming energy challenges by leveraging Chinese AI technology. While this could alleviate Canada’s energy demands, concerns have emerged about potential Chinese influence over the country’s power grid. With the cost of renewable energy production plummeting significantly, Zhang emphasized that green energy now outperforms fossil fuels economically.
Zhang highlighted the pivotal role of AI in making green energy systems both cost-effective and functional. By utilizing AI for real-time weather forecasting and grid balancing, Envision has successfully implemented a groundbreaking off-grid wind energy facility in Inner Mongolia, China. This facility produces net-zero hydrogen and ammonium, with plans to transport the green hydrogen via an 800-kilometer pipeline to urban centers for clean power generation.
Discussing his plans with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Zhang expressed confidence in implementing similar off-grid energy solutions in Canada’s vast wilderness. Despite China’s substantial investments in renewable energy, the country continues to build new coal plants, raising concerns about its commitment to transitioning away from fossil fuels. Greenpeace advocates for a clear timeline to phase out coal power in China and favors localized renewable energy systems over mega-energy centers.
As Canada explores potential collaborations with Envision, critics warn about the security implications of adopting Chinese-operated energy systems. Ontario Premier Doug Ford has expressed apprehensions about foreign control over Canadian infrastructure, particularly from Chinese technology. Zhang assures that Envision’s technology poses no security risks and emphasizes collaboration with local partners for transparency.
While China accelerates its green energy transition, the United States has shown reluctance towards renewables. Zhang stresses the inevitability of shifting to renewable energy, driven by scientific principles rather than political trends. With China pioneering AI-driven energy solutions, the question remains whether Canada is prepared to embrace this technological shift.
