“Outgoing Mayor Narrowly Defeated in Montreal’s Lachine Election”

Date:

Outgoing mayor Maja Vodanovic has been narrowly defeated in the closely contested municipal election in Montreal’s Lachine borough, losing by a slim margin of 26 votes. This race is one of several in the city that saw outcomes determined by extremely close results.

In the Lachine borough mayoral race, all 125 polling stations have been tallied, with Ensemble Montréal’s Julie-Pascale Provost emerging as the victor with 5,056 votes, according to the final results from Élections Montréal. Vodanovic, the Projet Montréal candidate, received 5,030 votes.

Similarly, the election for the borough’s single city councillor was a tight race, with Dominic Roussel of Ensemble Montréal winning by a mere eight votes over Projet Montréal’s Myriam Grondin.

In Parc-Extension, the city councillor position was decided by only six votes, with Elvira Carhuallanqui of Projet Montréal prevailing over the long-serving city councillor Mary Deros.

Another closely contested race was seen in Côte-des-Neiges, where Projet Montréal’s Émilie Brière secured victory over Ensemble Montréal’s Yvonne Nguyen by just six votes.

In Côte Saint-Luc, Mitchell Brownstein was narrowly defeated by David Tordjman by a single vote, while in Hampstead, incumbent Mayor Jeremy Levi managed to retain his position by a slim margin of 26 votes over Jack Edery.

Although there is no automatic recount process for tight races, candidates have the option to request a recount within four days of the election results being officially certified, as stated by an Élections Québec spokesperson.

Montrealers opted for change in the recent election, with Soraya Martinez Ferrada of Ensemble Montréal being elected as the new mayor, ending Projet Montréal’s eight-year rule.
