Drawing inspiration from Denmark, known for its stringent asylum policies, the British government plans to overhaul its system, emphasizing a temporary and regularly reviewed protection for refugees. The Home Office stated that support for certain asylum seekers, such as housing and weekly allowances, will be revoked, with priority given to those contributing to the economy and local communities.
Under the leadership of Shabana Mahmood, the Home Office highlighted that asylum seekers who can work but choose not to, or those who contravene the law, will face stricter measures. Mahmood emphasized the need for a more rigorous approach, with refugee status set to be reviewed every 2½ years, marking a prolonged path to permanent settlement spanning two decades.
The government is also looking to redefine the interpretation of Article 8 of the European Convention of Human Rights, aiming to maintain its commitment to the convention while ensuring a more stringent application of the provision related to the right to family life. Despite facing criticism from various quarters, including over 100 British charities, the government remains resolute in its stance on immigration policies.
