Earlier this week, the UCP government led by Danielle Smith used the notwithstanding clause to end a three-week strike by teachers in Alberta, preventing the Alberta Teachers’ Association from legally challenging the decision. In response, the Alberta Federation of Labour has hinted at the possibility of a general strike involving the province’s unions.
