GM Invests $691M in St. Catharines Plant

Date:

General Motors has announced a $691 million investment in its St. Catharines Propulsion Plant to bolster the production of its latest V-8 engines for full-sized trucks and SUVs. This investment will establish St. Catharines as the third plant to manufacture the sixth generation of the engine, joining facilities in Buffalo, N.Y., and Flint, Mich.

The decision to enhance operations in St. Catharines comes amidst concerns over the impact of U.S. tariffs on Canada’s automotive industry. GM Canada president Jack Uppal emphasized that this investment solidifies St. Catharines’ integral role in one of the company’s key vehicle programs for the foreseeable future.

In addition to the St. Catharines facility, GM has been focusing on its Oshawa plant, which produces pickup trucks. However, the company recently reduced operations at the plant from three shifts to two. Similarly, GM’s CAMI assembly plant in Ingersoll, Ont., remains inactive following the conclusion of electric delivery van production last year.

Trevor Longpre, Unifor Local 199 plant chair for the GM powertrain plant, expressed optimism about the investment, citing it as a significant vote of confidence in the plant and its workforce after a challenging year for the auto industry. Longpre highlighted that the investment underscores the plant’s ability to deliver high-quality products for GM’s popular vehicles, indicating a positive outlook for the future.

While the exact implications for the workforce, which currently comprises just under 500 active employees with approximately 150 on layoff, remain unclear, Longpre emphasized the positive impact of the investment. He noted that amidst uncertainties triggered by U.S. tariffs and demands for automotive production relocation, this development represents a welcome piece of good news for the industry and the community.
