Large dogs, known for their loyalty, affection, and sweetness, are often overlooked in pet adoption processes, as highlighted by Toronto Animal Services. The agency has partnered with NutriCanine, a local fresh dog food company, to shift perceptions about big dogs. Their joint campaign, scheduled from March 23 to April 23, aims to facilitate the adoption of large dogs and large-breed puppies in the Greater Toronto Area by waiving all adoption fees for these animals.
Defined as dogs over 50 pounds or puppies expected to exceed that weight, “big dogs” present unique challenges and opportunities. Elana Trainoff, Toronto Animal Services’ partnerships manager, emphasized that while some may feel hesitant about owning a large dog due to space and exercise requirements, these animals offer immense affection and companionship. Trainoff encouraged potential adopters to consider the love and joy that big dogs can bring into their lives.
The campaign, initiated to address the prolonged waiting periods large dogs endure in shelters solely due to their size, resulted in 58 successful adoptions last year. Trainoff emphasized that many large dogs adapt well to various living situations and personalities, with each dog having its own story and characteristics. To initiate the adoption process, interested individuals can visit the city’s webpage to browse available dogs, contact the relevant shelter to schedule a meeting, and assess compatibility with their family and existing pets.
Ultimately, the campaign underscores the importance of giving large dogs the chance to find loving homes, showcasing their unique qualities and potential as cherished companions.
