In Gaza City, Mu’ayyad Ajjour and neighbor Mohamed Zaida embarked on their daily search for the remains of Ajjour’s five-year-old cousin, Masa, following the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. Using makeshift tools and a pulley system, Zaida dug into the rubble while Ajjour sifted through the debris. The building, struck by an airstrike in March 2024, loomed precariously above Zaida as he ventured deeper into the unstable tunnel.
The ceasefire in Gaza has prompted families to search for their loved ones buried under the debris from the prolonged conflict. Recently, a search team informed Masa’s family of discovering remains that matched her description, including a skull with hair, a red earring, and a torn pink sweater. The emotional discovery brought closure to the family, allowing them to properly lay Masa to rest.
Tragically, Masa, along with her parents, fell victim to the violence in March 2024, with her father’s whereabouts still unknown and her mother recovering in a nearby hospital. Ajjour and Zaida tirelessly scoured the rubble each day, hoping to find any trace of the young girl. Their relentless efforts paid off when they unearthed a white shoe believed to belong to Masa, renewing their determination to continue the search.
Despite challenges accessing aid and heavy machinery due to the conflict’s aftermath, efforts are underway to clear the rubble in Gaza City. The United Nations Development Program has initiated debris removal operations to restore essential services, acknowledging the monumental task ahead due to the extensive destruction caused by the war.
For Ajjour and Zaida, the discovery of Masa’s remains marked a bittersweet moment, signaling the end of their search for the little girl. As they prepare to lay her to rest, their thoughts extend to Masa’s missing father, emphasizing the ongoing quest to reunite families torn apart by the conflict.
