“BBC Apologizes to Trump Over Misleading Edit”

Date:

The BBC issued an apology to President Donald Trump on Thursday for a misleading edit of his speech on January 6, 2021. The network acknowledged the error but denied defaming Trump, dismissing his threat of a $1 billion lawsuit. In a letter to the White House, BBC chair Samir Shah expressed regret for the misleading edit that implied Trump had made a direct call for violent action during the speech before his supporters breached the U.S. Capitol.

The BBC clarified that the documentary containing the edited footage, which spliced together different segments of Trump’s speech, will not be rebroadcast. The network admitted that the edit unintentionally created a false impression of Trump’s remarks. Trump’s lawyer had demanded an apology and retraction from the BBC, setting a deadline for a response.

Although the BBC did not address Trump’s demand for compensation in its statement, it emphasized that it would not be paying any damages. The dispute arose from a segment of the BBC’s program “Panorama – Trump: A Second Chance?” aired before the 2024 U.S. presidential election. The production company behind the film had combined quotes from different parts of Trump’s speech, omitting a section where he called for peaceful demonstrations.

Following the controversy, the BBC’s director-general Tim Davie and news chief Deborah Turness resigned, taking responsibility for the scandal’s impact on the network. Trump’s lawyer also sought a retraction of the documentary and other alleged defamatory statements about the president.

Legal experts have noted potential challenges for Trump in pursuing a lawsuit against the BBC, citing limitations on defamation damages in English courts and the documentary not being broadcast in the U.S. Despite skepticism around the merits of Trump’s claims against the media, he has previously secured settlements from American media outlets and could seek to leverage the BBC incident for a settlement, possibly for a charitable cause.
