“Poilievre Questions Carney’s Handling of Trump Trade Talks”

Date:

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is questioning Prime Minister Mark Carney’s ability to handle U.S. President Donald Trump, especially since a trade agreement between the two countries is still pending, delaying potential tariff reliefs for Canada. Poilievre expressed his disappointment during an interview on CBC’s Rosemary Barton Live, stating that Carney has not fulfilled his promises made during the spring election campaign.

Carney’s primary focus during the election campaign was centered on engaging with the U.S. administration. Negotiations were progressing towards a tariff deal until Trump abruptly terminated trade talks following an Ontario government advertisement that featured anti-tariff sentiments using former U.S. president Ronald Reagan’s words.

Trump mentioned that Carney apologized for the ad, which was subsequently withdrawn, but not before airing on American networks during the World Series weekend. Despite Trump’s statements, the Prime Minister’s Office has not confirmed Carney’s personal apology.

Furthermore, Trump indicated that there are no plans to resume trade discussions with Canada. Poilievre suggested that strengthening the economy could bolster Canada’s stance, emphasizing the importance of delivering on promises to advance significant projects. However, he refrained from comparing his approach to Carney’s, noting that the current focus should be on Carney’s leadership outcomes as the prime minister.

Poilievre criticized Carney, stating that his failures in international dealings are negatively impacting Canada domestically. The full interview with Poilievre will be broadcast on Rosemary Barton Live on Sunday at 10 a.m. ET.
