Exoplanet Expert Sara Seager Returns to Canada

Date:

Renowned exoplanet researcher Sara Seager is set to return to her native Canada after leaving her position at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to join the University of Toronto, her alma mater. Seager, known for her work in seeking Earth 2.0 and exploring the possibility of life beyond our planet, is excited about the move back to Toronto, where she spent her formative years. She expressed gratitude for the warm welcome she has always received in Canada, including from organizations like the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada.

Seager is scheduled to join the Canadian Institute for Theoretical Astrophysics (CITA) at the University of Toronto as a professor in September 2026. She is looking forward to sharing her ongoing research projects as well as initiating new endeavors to inspire upcoming generations of researchers. CITA’s director, Shantanu Basu, believes that Seager’s innovative leadership in the field will attract new talent and support for scientific endeavors.

One of Seager’s ambitious projects involves investigating the potential for life in the clouds of Venus. In a recent study she co-authored, the presence of phosphine in Venus’s clouds was suggested as a potential indicator of alien life. This discovery has sparked interest in exploring the habitability of Venus through projects like Morning Star, which aims to launch missions to the planet in the coming years.

Seager’s groundbreaking work extends beyond Venus, as she is also focused on identifying habitable exoplanets. Her Project Starshade, designed to detect Earth-like planets by blocking out the light of their host stars, exemplifies her dedication to pushing the boundaries of exoplanetary research. Despite temporary setbacks, Seager remains committed to advancing this project in the future.

The decision to bring Seager back to Canada was influenced by shifts in U.S. science funding policies, creating an opportunity for Canadian scientific research to thrive. Basu noted that CITA’s emphasis on cutting-edge science aligns perfectly with Seager’s expertise in exoplanetary research and her interdisciplinary approach that merges astrophysics with chemistry and engineering.

As Seager prepares to return to the University of Toronto, she reflects on the significance of coming full circle to her roots and making a meaningful impact in her home country. Her passion for exploring the mysteries of the universe and seeking out the building blocks of life continues to drive her research endeavors.
