Joni Mitchell Tribute Headlines 55th Juno Awards

Date:

Sarah McLachlan, folk artist Allison Russell, and up-and-coming country singer Cameron Whitcomb are set to take the stage at the 55th Juno Awards in Hamilton on March 29. McLachlan and Russell will team up for a special performance honoring Joni Mitchell, who is being presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award this year. The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences highlighted Mitchell’s significant impact on the global music scene and her groundbreaking contributions to songwriting.

A five-time Juno winner, Joni Mitchell received acclaim for her vocal jazz album “Both Sides Now” in 2001. Both McLachlan and Russell have previously collaborated in the “Joni Jam” live band, a group brought together by Brandi Carlile to support Mitchell after her health crisis in 2015. Russell notably showcased Mitchell’s “Both Sides, Now” at the 2025 SOCAN Awards, where Mitchell was honored with the Global Impact Award. McLachlan often includes Mitchell’s songs in her live performances, including the popular track “River,” featured on her 2006 album “Wintersong.”

Making his Junos debut this year, Cameron Whitcomb from Nanaimo, B.C., has garnered five nominations and will perform songs from his nominated album “The Hard Way.” Whitcomb, who gained recognition after appearing on “American Idol” in 2022, has built a devoted fan base with his authentic and introspective approach to country music, drawing inspiration from personal struggles and triumphs.

McLachlan, Russell, and Whitcomb will join a star-studded lineup at the Juno Awards, including the Beaches, Arkells, William Prince, and Daniel Caesar. Additionally, the Juno Week Kickoff concert on March 26 will feature performances by James Barker Band, Robyn Ottolini, Sacha, Kalsey Kulyk, and the Redhill Valleys. Junofest, a two-night concert series organized by CBC on March 27 and 28 in various venues across Hamilton, will showcase nearly 70 artists such as Great Lake Swimmers, Katie Tupper, Sebastian Gaskin, and Terra Lightfoot.

March 28 will witness a special ceremony celebrating Indigenous music pioneers, with performances by Little Creek Singers, Siibii, and YB Nakota. The Juno Awards promise a diverse and vibrant musical celebration, honoring both established legends and emerging talents on the Canadian music scene.
