Democrats Risk Losing Leverage After Shutdown Deal

Date:

Democrats in the U.S. Congress effectively resisted President Donald Trump, resulting in the longest federal government shutdown in American history. However, with certain Democratic senators agreeing to a deal to end the shutdown, the party faces the risk of losing some of the political leverage they had gained over the past six weeks. Polls consistently indicated that Democrats were winning the public opinion battle during the shutdown, with a majority of voters blaming either the Republicans in Congress or President Trump rather than the Democrats for the situation. These polls also revealed that most voters supported the Democrats on the critical issue at the heart of the congressional standoff: the imminent expiration of health insurance subsidies that could lead to increased premiums for millions of Americans.

After 40 days of the shutdown, all the Democrats have secured is a Republican commitment to hold a Senate vote on extending the subsidies, a vote they are likely to lose. The Republican Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson, taunted the Democrats over this, drawing a comparison to a popular TV show. While some Democratic figures criticized the deal as a surrender, arguing that it achieved little beyond reinstating federal workers’ jobs, others defended the decision as a pragmatic move given the circumstances.

The shutdown, which had begun in October, coincided with Democratic successes in the November elections, where they won key races in various states. While the Democrats made political gains during the shutdown, its impact on ordinary Americans was becoming increasingly severe, with thousands of flight cancellations, unpaid federal workers, and millions facing the risk of losing vital benefits. Despite criticism from some quarters, eight Senate Democrats crossed party lines to help advance the bill to end the shutdown, citing the impracticality of the tactics employed thus far.

The deal to end the shutdown is expected to pass in the House, with Democrats gearing up to capitalize on the affordability issue of healthcare costs in their future political strategies. Despite facing the impending end of the shutdown deal, Democratic leaders vow to continue their fight and utilize the healthcare cost issue to challenge the Republicans in the coming year.
