“Moon’s Magnetic Field Secrets Unveiled by Apollo Samples”

Date:

Lunar samples gathered by Apollo astronauts over 50 years ago are offering new insights into the moon’s enigmatic magnetic field, according to scientists’ recent findings. The University of Oxford researchers’ study reveals that the moon’s magnetic field, historically weak, experienced brief but intense periods of heightened activity surpassing Earth’s magnetic strength around three to four billion years ago.

The study, published in Nature Geoscience, highlights the significance of magnetic fields in shielding against cosmic rays and solar radiation. Lead researcher Claire Nichols explains that short-lived spikes in magnetic field intensity on the moon, lasting no more than a few decades or up to 5,000 years, were likely caused by the melting of titanium-rich rocks deep within the lunar surface.

Previous assumptions about the moon’s magnetic field were based on Apollo mission rock samples, collected from low-latitude lava plains. With the upcoming Artemis program focusing on the moon’s south polar region and its unique geological features, including water ice in shadowed craters, researchers anticipate gaining further insights into the moon’s ancient magnetic properties.

Nichols and her team discovered a correlation between high levels of titanium in the Apollo samples and preserved evidence of strong magnetic activity. This suggests that magnetic field variations on the moon may have been more dynamic and fluctuating than previously believed, challenging conventional understanding.

The upcoming Artemis missions, set to launch from Kennedy Space Center, will involve astronauts conducting detailed studies of ancient rocks near the moon’s south pole. By unraveling the moon’s magnetic history, researchers aim to enhance our understanding of planetary habitability and the role of magnetic shields in celestial bodies’ evolution.
