“London Police Cracking Down on Illegal Firearms”

Date:

In 2025, London, Ontario, has seen a surge in reported shootings, with the count reaching 20, prompting a concerted effort by the police to track the sources of illegal firearms and remove them from circulation. The Guns and Gangs Section of the London Police Service (LPS) has identified the origins of 31 guns this year through the Firearms Analysis and Tracing Enforcement (FATE) process.

The process begins when a firearm is delivered to the Forensics Identification Section lab, where Det. Const. Craig Walsh, a forensic specialist, initiates an investigation for clues. DNA analysis is a critical aspect of the forensic work, with Walsh swabbing the firearm to collect DNA samples. These samples are then sent to the Centre for Forensic Science in Toronto, often revealing multiple DNA profiles that can aid in identifying suspects and seizing illegal weapons.

Following DNA collection, Walsh focuses on obtaining fingerprints from the firearms. By using a fine powder and a brush, he dusts the weapon’s surface to reveal any latent prints, which can be compared against the RCMP national database for potential matches. Additionally, firearms leave unique markings on bullets and casings, allowing for the creation of a “fingerprint” that can be uploaded to an international database for cross-referencing with other crime scenes.

Criminals have adapted their behaviors over time, presenting new challenges for forensic experts. One notable trend is the emergence of ghost guns, 3D-printed weapons without traditional identifiers, making tracing more difficult. Despite this, traditional forensic methods like DNA and fingerprint analysis remain valuable tools in investigating gun-related crimes.

The majority of traced guns have been found to originate from the United States, with a significant percentage entering London from south of the border. Det. Sgt. Jon Meinen emphasized the importance of understanding the gun supply chain to prevent illegal firearms from entering the city, ultimately reducing gun-related activities. Gang and drug-related incidents are often associated with traced guns, highlighting the ongoing need for law enforcement efforts to curb the influx of illegal firearms into the community.
