“Over 69,000 Palestinians Killed in Israel-Hamas Conflict”

Date:

More than 69,000 Palestinians have lost their lives in the conflict between Israel and Hamas, as reported by Gaza health officials on Saturday. This grim milestone was reached during the ongoing exchange of bodies following the recent ceasefire agreement.

The surge in fatalities is attributed to the recovery of more bodies in the devastated Gaza Strip since the ceasefire commenced on October 10, along with the identification of additional casualties, including those targeted by Israeli strikes against alleged militants.

On Saturday, Israel returned the remains of 15 Palestinians to Gaza, following the return of an Israeli hostage’s remains the day before. The hostage, identified as Lior Rudaeff, was confirmed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office to have been born in Argentina.

The ceasefire’s primary phase focuses on the exchange of remains, with Hamas mandated to promptly return all hostages. Supporters gathered in Tel Aviv once again to demand the return of all hostages.

The truce aims to de-escalate the deadliest and most destructive conflict between Israel and Hamas, which started with a Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, resulting in numerous casualties and hostages.

In a separate incident on the same day, Israeli settlers carried out two attacks on Palestinian farmers and others in the occupied West Bank, coinciding with the olive harvest season. As part of the exchange process, for each Israeli hostage repatriated, Israel releases the remains of 15 Palestinians. So far, 300 sets of remains have been returned, with 89 individuals identified.

The challenge of verifying identities due to limited resources and DNA availability has led to the burial of unidentified remains in groups. Families anxiously sift through decomposed remains, hoping to find closure.

Amid ongoing violence, the Palestinian death toll in Gaza has risen to 69,169 since the conflict began. The Gaza Health Ministry, under Hamas administration, maintains detailed records, with 284 new additions to the death toll verified between October 31 and November 7.

The ministry reported that 10 bodies were brought to Gaza hospitals in recent days, with 241 fatalities since the ceasefire’s implementation. Many Palestinians are still unaccounted for, adding to the anguish of families awaiting news of their missing loved ones.

In a concerning development, Israeli military forces fatally shot two militants in separate incidents in Gaza. Meanwhile, Palestinian health officials reported injuries from an attack by Israeli settlers in the West Bank town of Beita, affecting journalists, medics, activists, and farmers.

The United Nations highlighted a surge in settler attacks on Palestinians and their properties in the West Bank, with over 260 incidents recorded in October, the highest monthly figure in years. The lack of arrests and prosecutions for settler violence has drawn criticism from rights groups.

In a distressing account, journalist and activist Jonathan Pollak described a violent encounter with Israeli settlers during his olive-picking activity, resulting in injuries to himself and colleagues. The need for accountability and protection for journalists covering such events was emphasized.

As tensions persist, efforts to maintain peace and address escalating violence remain paramount in the conflict-ridden region.
